Age Divisions & Player Development
Blackford Youth Soccer League organizes teams by age group to ensure players develop in a safe, supportive, and appropriately challenging environment. Our divisions are structured to build skills progressively while keeping the game fun, active, and development-focused.
U6 Division
Ages: 4–5 years old
Ball Size: Size 3
U6 is our introduction to soccer. At this level, the focus is on fun, movement, and learning the very basics of the game.
Players learn:
Basic ball control
Dribbling fundamentals
Listening and teamwork skills
Simple game structure
Practices and games are short, energetic, and designed to build confidence and excitement about soccer.
U8 Division
Ages: 6–7 years old
Ball Size: Size 3
U8 players begin to understand the structure of the game while continuing to develop core skills.
Players focus on:
Controlled dribbling
Passing fundamentals
Introduction to positions
Small-sided gameplay
Coaches emphasize sportsmanship, teamwork, and learning through play.
U10 Division
Ages: 8–9 years old
Ball Size: Size 4
At U10, players begin to develop a stronger understanding of teamwork and strategy.
Players work on:
Passing and receiving
Defensive positioning
Offensive movement
Game awareness
Games become more structured, and players rotate through positions to build well-rounded experience.
U12 Division
Ages: 10–11 years old
Ball Size: Size 4
U12 introduces a higher level of tactical understanding and skill refinement.
Players develop:
Ball control under pressure
Defensive and offensive shape
Communication on the field
Increased strategic awareness
The pace of play increases, and teamwork becomes more advanced.
U15 Division
Ages: 12–14 years old
Ball Size: Size 5
U15 prepares players for junior high and high school competition.
Players focus on:
Advanced positioning
Tactical decision-making
Conditioning and endurance
Leadership and communication
At this level, the game becomes faster and more competitive while maintaining our commitment to sportsmanship and player development.
Placement Guidelines
Divisions are generally determined by birth year and grade level. Final placement is guided by league age charts and seasonal registration numbers to ensure balanced teams and fair competition.
